Summer Sandbox Surprise

Sue-Head-ShotAnother day, another dollar. We have another busy weekend planned. My little man is turning 2 and a small celebration seems in order. Today I ordered the birthday cake, and tomorrow I’m picking it up along with the rest of the fixin’s. ... We’re having a small party – just Grandparents, Godparents, and Nana, his great aunt and surrogate grandma. Should be a nice little get together.

My hubby, ever clever with the tools, built him a nice sized sandbox for the historic event and everyone is pitching in a little money to help pay for it as his birthday present. Apparently “Play Sand” is VERY expensive ... who would have guessed that!?!?! I mean ... it’s sand? I plan to pick up a present yet consisting of a couple toys for him to use in his new sandbox.

When I was a kid, we had a HUGE one, and I have lots of fond memories of sitting around that sandbox with my siblings burying GI Joes and Barbies and making sand cities, only to crush them again with the giant hand monster! I can only hope my son has as much fun. Inspiring imagination! If building a sandbox isn’t your thing, but you’d still like your kids to have the opportunity to get dirty and create sand cities of their own, there are smaller ready-to-go plastic versions that take no skill or preparation whatsoever.

Let them run, let them explore, get them outside, and let them get dirty. After all, kids only stay young so long, and soon summer will be gone! Happy Birthday Lil’ Man!! Can’t believe it’s already been 2 years!

Thanks for the tip! I will keep that in mind! Thankfully we don't have too many stray cats around where I live, so hopefully we will be okay. I know we had a large homemade sandbox when we were kids and would spend hours with my brothers playing in it. Even my older girl (who is almost 10) will make sand castles for her little brother so he can smash them. They have a blast!

@Sue, kids do grow up so fast. I’ve raised two families and am kind of in the middle of another. My two older kids are 39 and 40. My Youngest is 26 and lives with me with her son of five years old. It keeps an old man young. Well, sort of. You are in for a great life adventure. Enjoy every minute that you can. With my youngest we had a great home made sand box. After a few trips to the doctor with repertory issues we discovered that the cats in the neighborhood thought it was a wonderful thing we had built a giant litter box for them. I bought a tarp and began covering the box when not in use and the issue was solved. I recommend that all outdoor sand boxes be covered with some kind of animal proof covering to prevent them from using the facilities. Have a great curious two year old day.
